To accomplish snow removal and sanding, the County has a fleet of 10 graders, equipped with snow wings and V plows and a fleet of 5 plow trucks with sanders. This equipment is supplemented with up to 4 construction graders in the event of a major storm or equipment breakdown.

The County maintains approximately 275 km of paved or oiled roads and approximately 1500 km of gravel roads. The paved/oiled roads are normally maintained using truck plows and the gravel roads using graders.

Paved/Oiled Roads

When snow accumulates on oiled and paved roads our trucks are deployed to plow and sand the roads. Sanding priority is on hills, curves, intersections and railroad crossings.

Priorities are main grid roads followed by subdivisions.

Gravel Roads

Plowing of gravel roads generally commences when snowfall accumulation reaches 100 – 150 mm. Our goal is to clear the local roads within 72 hours at least 80% of the time.

After a severe snowstorm or continued windy conditions, paved, oiled and gravel roads may take longer to clear and sand.

Sanding of gravel roads is not normally done. In extremely icy conditions some sanding at intersections, railway crossings, hills and curves may be done.

Driveways

IMPORTANT: When plowing snow out of your driveway, either by yourself or having someone else do it, DO NOT push the snow out onto the road or across the road. This can result in unsafe road conditions and/or loss of road gravel

The snow is to be pushed to the right of the driveway to ensure that Sturgeon County snow plowing operations do not move the snow back into your driveway.

County crews may plow private driveways once all public roads are cleared:

  • To make arrangements for our crews to clear your driveway, contact our Transportation department during office hours
  • Crews will only clear driveways that have a municipal address sign visibly displayed on the property.(to get your municipal address sign, please contact any local signage company)
  • Most driveways take about 10 minutes to clear. A minimum charge is applied if it takes more than 20 minutes to complete.
  • Common practice is that there should be at least 150 mm (6”) of snow prior to requesting a driveway be snow plowed
  • Sturgeon County is not responsible for property damage when plowing driveways at the owners request
