Weed Control Program

The Provincial Weed Control Act requires that municipalities take responsibility for ensuring noxious and restricted weeds are either controlled or destroyed, respectively. To meet the requirements of the Act, Sturgeon County hires weed inspectors and qualified herbicide applicators.

Weed Inspection
Our weed inspectors carry out inspections to ensure that residents are effectively controlling the weeds on their property, as well as monitor Sturgeon County owned land and ditches for weed issues. They also serve as a valuable source of information on weed identification and weed control methods.

When a weed issue is found on private property, the first step is to inform the land owner or renter about the problem by sending them a friendly letter and an information package. If the control work is not completed after this is done, then the inspector has the authority to issue an enforceable weed notice.

We highly encourage residents to report any noxious or restricted weed issues to the Sturgeon County Agriculture Services Department at 780-939-8349 so that we can prevent small weed problems from growing into a much larger issue.

Weed Spraying
This year, a broadcast herbicide application will be done on the roadsides in the West half of the County (from Range Road 244 to the Western County Border). Spot Spraying will be done in the east half as required.Select Sturgeon County Park Reserves will be sprayed for noxious weeds as required.

Please note that Sturgeon County does not spray areas which are:

Note for Organic Growers:
Please provide us with a copy of your certificate at the time of signing the agreement.

• within 100 metres of a residential dwelling

• within 30 metres of a body of water (except when in compliance with the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides)

• next to crops sensitive to the chemical being sprayed

• within 50 metres of a planted shelterbelt or a dugout

• adjacent to gardens, nurseries, or greenhouses

• posted with a Sturgeon County issued "Do Not Spray" sign

The property owner/resident shall be responsible for weed control in the roadside ditch of the above mentioned areas.
Landowners who do not want spraying carried out adjacent to their property require Sturgeon County issued "Do Not Spray" signs. Those interested in obtaining these signs must enter into a written agreement with Sturgeon County, in which they take responsibility for weed control in the road allowance adjacent to their property. ‘No Spray Agreements’ are only valid for the year that they are issued and must be renewed on an annual basis. The deadline for agreements is May 14, 2010.

Control work in "No Spray Areas" must be completed by June 30, 2010. If it is not completed by this deadline, then the county will arrange for it to be done, and the costs will be recovered from the individual who signed the agreement.
