Gravel Extraction Area Structure Plan
Public Open House - May 22, 2001

PURPOSE

This open house is intended to present a draft development concept which addresses public concerns. Part of this process is also to gain public input and feedback on this development concept, as it is the focal part of the overall Area Structure Plan.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
On February 8, 2000, the Sturgeon County Subdivision Development and Appeal Board upheld an appeal by neighboring residents in the Calahoo area to deny a permit for gravel mining operation.

Sturgeon County decided that to mitigate concerns over gravel development, an Area Structure Plan would be developed. Area residents have been working with a committee consisting of representatives from the county, province and gravel industry to develop this plan which will prescribe development conditions and sequence for future gravel extraction near the Calahoo Area, and across the Villeneuve Gravel Extraction Overlay Area, a larger area where existing gravel extraction activities are located.

NEXT STEPS
Following this open house, the project team and steering committee will refine the development concept and work on developing the overall Area Structure Plan. A second open house will be held to present the draft Area Structure Plan to the public, prior to submission to County Council for approval.
