County roads can sometimes be more challenging to drive.

Unpaved roads may be harder on vehicles. Gravel and oil roads are often rough, slippery when wet and muddy during spring thaw.

  • Allow for possible increased vehicle maintenance costs.
    Unpaved roads generate dust.
  • Sign up for the user-pay dust control program to help reduce dust if you live adjacent to an unpaved county road.

After an average snowstorm, paved and oiled roads should be plowed, and major intersections sanded within the first 24 hours. Graveled roads should be cleared within 72 hours. After a severe snowstorm, this roadwork may take longer. In extreme weather conditions, county maintained roads may only be passable for large vehicles and four-wheel drives.

  • Have snow tires, or chains accessible during these times.
  • Check with Alberta Transportation for road maintenance on primary and secondary highways.

Roadside brushing on local roads is often done to improve sightlines for drivers.
At times, you may find yourself driving behind a road maintenance vehicle.

  • Do not follow too close.
  • Pass with extreme caution.
